浣熊原产自北美洲，因其进食前要将食物在水中浣洗，故名浣熊，浣熊眼睛周围为黑色，尾部有深浅交错的圆环，皮毛的大部分为灰色，也有部分为棕色和黑色。也有罕见的白化种。浣熊为杂食动物，食物有浆果、昆虫、鸟卵和其它小动物。生活在都市近郊的浣熊常会潜入人类住处偷窃食物，加上眼睛周遭的黑色条纹特征，因此常被称为\"食物小偷\"。浣熊是“游泳健将”。体型较小，一般不超过10公斤，最小的不到1 公斤。浣熊喜欢栖息在靠近河流、湖泊或池塘的树林中，它们大多成对或结成家族一起活动。浣熊白天大多在树上休息，晚上出来活动。虽然是食肉目动物，但浣熊偏于杂食，它通常吃吃鱼、蛙和小型陆生动物，也吃野果、坚果、种子、橡树籽等。浣熊尾长，有黑白环纹，产于北美与中美，筑巢于树洞，昼眠夜出，杂食，有“洗催”食物的习性，树栖的蓬尾浣熊属和地栖的长鼻浣熊都有尾环，而卷尾洗熊和长尾洗熊属的长尾（超过体长1.5--2.0倍）无环纹，前者的长尾有缠绕性。
